Description

The Doctoral Program in Human Resource Management (HRM) at Universitas Batam was established in response to the strategic need for highly qualified human capital capable of leading organisational transformation, fostering innovation, and strengthening organisational competitiveness at the regional, national, and global levels. This need is particularly significant in the Riau Islands Province, an international border region that serves as a strategic hub for trade, investment, and labour mobility across neighbouring countries.

The programme was initiated as part of Universitas Batam's long-term vision to develop a doctoral education programme that is research-oriented, grounded in contemporary issues, and capable of making meaningful contributions to regional and national development. During its initial development, the Faculty strengthened its academic capacity through collaboration with nationally recognised experts in Human Resource Management, the development of a research-based curriculum aligned with global standards, and continuous enhancement of academic staff qualifications and the institutional research ecosystem.

Responding to the increasing demand for highly competent Human Resource Management specialists across government institutions, private enterprises, state-owned enterprises, healthcare organisations, educational institutions, and micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), Universitas Batam has positioned Human Resource Management as one of its strategic areas of excellence. The programme emphasises advanced study in contemporary HRM theory and practice, including transformational leadership, organisational behaviour, strategic human resource management (Strategic HRM), digital human resource management (Digital HR), and talent management within multicultural organisational environments.

Throughout its development, the Doctoral Program in Human Resource Management has continued to strengthen its academic standing through the advancement of flagship research, the expansion of academic networks, and international collaboration. Research undertaken by faculty members and doctoral candidates has made significant contributions to addressing strategic challenges in border regions, particularly in the areas of bureaucratic transformation and civil service management, enhancing organisational performance in both public and private sectors, human resource governance in strategic industries, local talent development within the global ecosystem, and the strengthening of micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), healthcare services, and the tourism sector.

Today, the Doctoral Program in Human Resource Management of the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Batam, has evolved into a centre for the advancement of human resource management scholarship. The programme is committed not only to producing academically accomplished doctoral graduates but also to developing thought leaders who are capable of addressing the complex challenges of sustainable development in dynamic border regions. It reaffirms Universitas Batam's commitment to preparing doctoral graduates who demonstrate integrity, visionary leadership, technological adaptability, and the capacity to serve as agents of change across business organisations, public institutions, and society. Supported by experienced academic staff, a robust research ecosystem, and strong engagement with strategic regional issues, the programme continues its journey toward becoming a Centre of Excellence in Human Capital Management education and research in Indonesia.
