Profil Universitas Batam

Background

The current era of globalization and free trade presents increasingly challenging industrial and commercial environments, demanding increased competitiveness and work efficiency. Human resources, as the primary capital factor, will become a pressing need, determining factors, and a priority at both national and international levels. Therefore, effective and efficient management, along with the provision of high-tech facilities and infrastructure, are a priority that deserves attention.

Many industrialized countries around the world are experiencing an increasing need for human resources and a shortage of skilled and expert labor due to changes in various fields, particularly in the industrial sector. Conversely, Indonesia is experiencing an increase in human resources, with millions of graduates, from elementary, junior high, high school, and university, who are not yet mentally and technically prepared and trained for work. To anticipate future development trends and demands for human resource skills, especially for the Indonesian nation, Batam must develop skills relevant to changing needs and job opportunities. As an integrated and specialized development area, Batam is expected to:

  • Become a region capable of competing with the outside world and its surroundings in all fields.

  • As a leading region facing the international community, Indonesia requires various facilities and human resources with vision, personal and technical skills to anticipate global developments.

  • It must be able to become a world-class industrial, goods, services, and tourism hub comparable to Singapore and other neighboring countries.

A dynamic higher education institution oriented toward the era of globalization needs to be developed by implementing educational programs of national and international standard. This institution must also be able to develop competitive partnerships with higher education institutions from various developed countries.

Establishment History

In line with the above thinking, the founders and supporters of the Griya Husada Foundation were called to establish a university with the initial name of Abulyatama University based on the Decree of Establishment from the Director General of National Education of the Republic of Indonesia Number 58/D/O/2000, where the groundbreaking for the construction of the university campus building was carried out on May 30, 2000 by Mr. Dr. Satryo Soemantri Brojonegoro as Director General of National Education of the Republic of Indonesia, who was accompanied by Mr. Dr. H. Rusli Bintang as Chairman of the Griya Husada Foundation, and Mr. Prof. Dr. H. M Nasir, as Rector of Abulyatama University, inaugurated on January 26, 2001 by Mr. Dr. A. Yahya Muhaimin, who at that time served as Minister of National Education of the Republic of Indonesia.

Abulyatama University then changed its name to Batam University based on Decree (SK) of the Director General of National Higher Education of the Republic of Indonesia Number 242/D/O/200, dated November 16, 2001, after receiving a letter of recommendation and approval from the Coordinator of Private Higher Education Region X for the West Sumatra, Riau, and Jambi Regions. The Rector was Prof. Chainur Arrasjid, SH. Currently, the Rector of Batam University is Prof. Dr. Ir. H. Novirman Jamarun, MSc.

A well-designed and high-quality management system, teaching and learning processes, human resources, facilities, infrastructure, and programs, both academic and professional, are required to be ready to face developments in the science and technology era and meet workforce needs in Indonesia and internationally. Batam University strives to provide high-quality education through a system, programs, activities, and human resources that meet the needs of national and international industry.

In addition to developing an international-level university, Batam University has a social aspect and noble ideals: "Fostering and Supporting Orphans and Children from Underprivileged Families" from various corners of the country, particularly children in Batam and the surrounding areas.
